Scrollmarks

Scrollmarks are a feature found in some digital reading applications and web browsers that allow users to mark their current position within a document or webpage. Unlike traditional bookmarks, which typically save a link to a specific page, scrollmarks save the precise vertical position on a scrollable page. This means that when a user returns to the content, they are placed exactly where they left off, even if they had scrolled down significantly.

The functionality of scrollmarks is particularly useful for long articles, documents, or web pages where users might be interrupted and need to resume reading without having to re-navigate or scroll to find their place again. Some applications automatically save scrollmarks, while others require users to manually set them. The storage and retrieval of these marks are typically handled by the application's internal data management system.

Scrollmarks are distinct from browser history, which records the pages visited, and from persistent scroll position features that might be implemented server-side for specific web applications. They are primarily a client-side convenience for individual users. The term itself is a portmanteau of "scroll" and "bookmark," clearly indicating its purpose. Not all reading software or browsers implement this feature, and its availability can vary widely.
