Scribonii

The Scribonii were an ancient Roman gens, or prominent family, that rose to prominence in the late Roman Republic and continued to be influential throughout the Roman Empire. The name Scribonius is of Etruscan origin. Members of the Scribonii family held various significant political and military offices, including consul and praetor.

The earliest known Scribonius to hold high office was Publius Scribonius Libo, who served as consul in 211 BC during the Second Punic War. His descendants continued to be active in Roman politics. One notable branch of the family, the Scribonii Libones, produced several prominent figures. Another important member was Gaius Scribonius Curio, a tribune of the plebs in 49 BC, whose actions contributed to the outbreak of Caesar's Civil War.

Throughout the Imperial period, members of the Scribonii family continued to hold senatorial rank and important positions within the administration. They were known for their intellectual pursuits as well, with some members credited with literary or medical contributions. The Scribonii family name appears in historical records and inscriptions, testifying to their enduring presence in Roman society.
