Scotica
Scotica is a term used to describe a condition characterized by the presence of a white or yellowish spot on the iris of the eye, typically located in the central or paracentral region. This condition is often associated with certain medical conditions, including diabetes, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol. Scotica can also be a symptom of other disorders such as hypothyroidism, liver disease, and certain types of cancer. The exact cause of scotica is not fully understood, but it is believed to be related to the accumulation of lipid deposits in the iris, a condition known as iris lipofuscinosis. Scotica is usually benign and does not typically cause visual impairment or discomfort. However, in some cases, it may be a sign of a more serious underlying condition, and medical evaluation is recommended. Treatment options for scotica are limited and often focus on managing the underlying condition. In some cases, laser therapy may be used to remove the lipid deposits, but this is typically only considered for cosmetic reasons. Regular eye examinations are important for monitoring the condition and detecting any potential complications.
