Schlüsselkopie refers to the act of creating a duplicate of a physical key. This process is typically carried out by locksmiths or specialized key cutting services. To make a copy, an existing key is used as a template. The original key is placed in a key cutting machine, which then traces its unique grooves and notches. A blank key of the same type is then inserted into the machine, and a cutting blade carves corresponding indentations into the blank, replicating the pattern of the original.

The accuracy of the copy is crucial for its functionality. If the cuts are not precise, the duplicate key may not operate the lock correctly or at all. In some cases, particularly with more complex or high-security keys, specialized equipment and techniques may be required to ensure a perfect match. Legal considerations can also apply to key copying, especially for master keys or keys that are explicitly restricted from duplication by the lock manufacturer or owner. Obtaining a key copy usually involves presenting the original key or, in some jurisdictions, proof of ownership or authorization.
