Schlern

Schlern refers to a prominent mountain massif in the Dolomites, a mountain range located in northeastern Italy. Administratively, it is part of the South Tyrol autonomous province. The massif is characterized by its distinctive, somewhat flattened summit plateau, which gives it a unique appearance compared to many of the sharper peaks in the Dolomites. The highest point of the Schlern massif is the Petz, reaching an elevation of 2,563 meters (8,409 feet).

The Schlern is a popular destination for hikers and mountaineers. Several trails lead to its summit plateau, offering panoramic views of the surrounding Dolomite peaks, including the Plattkofel, Langkofel, and the Rosengarten group. The plateau itself is a vast, relatively flat area that was once the site of a large lake, now largely dried up. Scattered across the plateau are alpine meadows and a few mountain huts, such as the Schlernhaus, which provides accommodation and refreshments to visitors.

The massif is also known for its distinctive shape, which has inspired artistic and literary works. The Schlern is a recognizable landmark in the region and is often depicted in paintings and photographs of the Dolomites. Its accessibility and scenic beauty make it a significant feature of the South Tyrolean landscape and a focal point for outdoor recreation.
