Schlackenbildungen, also known as slags, are non-metallic byproducts that result from the smelting of ores to extract metals. These slags are typically less viscous and have a lower melting point.

The primary function of slags in metallurgy is to remove impurities from the molten metal. As the metal is smelted, the impurities rise to the surface and form a slag layer. This layer can be periodically skimmed off to remove the impurities and improve the purity of the metal. Slags can also play a role in the reduction of metal oxides, as they can provide a reducing environment that facilitates the conversion of metal oxides to metal.

In addition to their role in metallurgy, slags have various other applications. They can be used as construction materials, such as in the production of cement and concrete. They can also be used as a source of valuable minerals, such as iron and aluminum, which can be recovered through further processing. However, the handling and disposal of slags can pose environmental challenges, as they can contain hazardous materials and contribute to pollution if not managed properly.
