Schichtpaketen

Schichtpakete refers to a type of package commonly used in the German labor market, originating from the law on working hours and working time. The concept consists of several hours or days that can be committed to the employee by the employer, to be accumulated and then used by the employee. This can be done to reduce the number of working hours in a shorter period or overtime, when the employee's workload is less demanding.

Schichtpakete are primarily beneficial to employees who have variable work schedules. This type is used particularly for employees who work irregular hours or night hours, allowing for flexible management of their free time and reduced stress related to their shifts. The employer and employee agree on the arrangement and what working hours correspond to the commitment.

Employees may hand over unused Schichtpakete to their colleagues or use them to adjust their annual number of working hours. Any remaining hours from the Schichtpaket that are not used up are typically earned out annually. The benefits are observed to enhance work-life balance, including enabling employees to make family commitments.
