Saxe-Meiningen was a historic German duchy located in what is now Thuringia. It was formed in the late 17th century as a partition of Saxe-Weimar and was ruled by a cadet branch of the Wettin dynasty from its capital at Meiningen. The duchy remained a sovereign state within the Holy Roman Empire and later within the German Confederations and the German Empire until the monarchies were abolished in 1918.
