Sawai

Sawai is a historical royal title used by rulers in the Indian princely states of Amber and Jaipur, in present-day Rajasthan. The title was affixed to the names of senior members of the ruling house and signified elevated status within the dynasty. Its exact origin is not clearly documented, but it became associated with the Jaipur royal line and appears frequently in inscriptions and historical chronicles.

Notable bearers include Sawai Jai Singh II, the ruler who established Jaipur as the capital in the early 18th century, and Sawai Pratap Singh, who oversaw late 18th-century developments such as the Hawa Mahal. The title appears almost exclusively in historical contexts and is seldom used as an official designation today.

The name Sawai also appears in geography and personal names. Sawai Madhopur is a district and city in southeastern Rajasthan, and Ranthambore National Park is located there.
