Savuilmaisimet, also known as smoke detectors, are devices designed to detect the presence of smoke, a common indicator of fire. Early detection of smoke is crucial for providing occupants with sufficient time to evacuate a building safely and for firefighters to respond effectively.

There are two primary types of smoke detectors based on their sensing technology: ionization and photoelectric. Ionization smoke detectors contain a small amount of radioactive material that ionizes the air within a chamber, creating a current. When smoke particles enter the chamber, they disrupt this current, triggering the alarm. These detectors are generally more responsive to flaming fires, which produce smaller smoke particles.

Photoelectric smoke detectors use a light sensor and a light beam. In a photoelectric detector, a light beam is aimed away from a sensor. When smoke enters the chamber, it scatters the light beam, causing it to hit the sensor and activate the alarm. These detectors are typically more effective at detecting smoldering fires, which produce larger smoke particles. Many modern smoke detectors combine both ionization and photoelectric technologies to offer broader detection capabilities.

Smoke detectors are typically powered by batteries or a direct electrical connection to the building's power supply. Battery-powered units require periodic battery replacement, while hardwired units may have a backup battery. Regular testing and maintenance are essential to ensure that smoke detectors are functioning correctly. This usually involves pressing a test button monthly and replacing the unit every ten years or as recommended by the manufacturer.
