Savoia

Savoia is the Italian name for Savoy, a historical region in the western Alps. Its territory is now divided between France (the departments of Savoie and Haute-Savoie) and the Italian region of Piedmont, where the historic core was the Duchy of Savoy with Chambéry as its capital. The area played a central role in the politics of the western Alpine arc from the Middle Ages onward.

The House of Savoy (Casa Savoia) is the royal dynasty associated with Savoia. It traces its origins to medieval lords in the region and, from the 15th century, ruled the Duchy of Savoy. In the 18th century the dynasty acquired the crown of Sardinia, creating the Kingdom of Sardinia (often seen as the nucleus of the modern Italian state). The house produced the first king of a united Italy, Victor Emmanuel II, in 1861, and its later monarchs included Umberto I and Victor Emmanuel III. The monarchy in Italy was abolished after a 1946 referendum, and the House of Savoy continues as a non-reigning royal family.

In modern history, Savoy’s political status shifted as part of the process of Italian unification and Franco-Italian border adjustments. The 1860 Treaty of Turin led to Savoy and Nice being ceded to France as compensation for French support in Italian unification. Savoy remains a symbol of regional identity in both France and Italy and is often referenced in cultural and historical contexts through the Italian name Savoia.

The term Savoia also appears in toponyms, cultural references, and firm names, reflecting its historical and dynastic associations.
