Savannakhet

Savannakhet is a city in southern Laos, the capital of Savannakhet Province, located on the Mekong River directly opposite Mukdahan, Thailand. It is Laos's second-largest city and a major border town and commercial hub, connecting Thailand and Vietnam via the East-West Economic Corridor.

The city sits in the Mueang Savannakhet District and serves as the administrative and economic center of the province. Its history includes centuries of Lao-Thai interaction and a period of development under French colonial rule when river trade along the Mekong expanded. In the modern era, Savannakhet has grown as a regional commerce node with markets, logistics facilities, and cross-border services.

Savannakhet experiences a tropical monsoon climate, with a rainy season from May to October and a dry season from November to April.

A key feature is its cross-border link with Mukdahan via the Second Thai-Lao Friendship Bridge, enabling trade and travel between Laos and Thailand. The city is a stop on the East-West Economic Corridor, and road networks radiate to other parts of Laos and to Vietnam.

The city contains That Ing Hang Stupa, an important Buddhist site near Savannakhet that houses relics of the Buddha and hosts religious festivals. Local markets and riverside areas along the Mekong reflect Lao and Thai influences. The city also serves as a gateway for visitors exploring southern Laos and transborder commerce.
