Savanakhets

Savanakhets is a fictional ethnogeographic term describing the people, language, and homeland of a riverine community in the savanna region of the continent of Valoria. The Savanakhet homeland runs along the Savan River and its delta, where seasonal floods influence settlement, agriculture, and trade.

Etymology: The name combines the river’s name, Savan, with khet, a root meaning land or people in the local tongue.

Geography and ecology: The region lies in a tropical savanna belt with pronounced wet and dry seasons. Floodplains, oxbow lakes, and mangrove fringes support irrigated crops, fishing, and river transport; soils are fertile alluvial deposits near the delta.

History and society: Early communities date to the 12th–13th centuries. They formed a loose riverine confederacy linking inland villages with coastal towns. A ceremonial river chief represents the people in inter-polity affairs; elders’ council governs local matters. The Savanakhet language belongs to the Savenic family.

Economy and culture: Agriculture (millet, sorghum, rice), freshwater fishing, and boatbuilding form the economic base, supplemented by crafts such as basketry and pottery. Festivals centered on floods and harvests reinforce communal identity. In the modern setting, Savanakhets are part of the Valorian federation, with autonomous regional councils and shared markets.
