Satraps were the governors of the provinces, or satrapies, of the Achaemenid Empire (c. 550–330 BCE). The term derives from Old Persian, commonly translated as governor or protector of the province. Satraps served as the king’s primary administrative and military authorities in the empire’s vast territory.
