Satellitkommunikation involves using artificial satellites to relay and amplify radio signals. This technology is crucial for telecommunications, including television broadcasting, telephone, and internet services, particularly in remote or underserved areas where terrestrial infrastructure is difficult or impossible to deploy.

A typical satellite communication system consists of three main components: ground stations (or earth stations), satellites in orbit, and the users who receive the signals. Ground stations transmit signals to the satellite, which then relays them to other ground stations or directly to user terminals. Satellites are typically placed in geostationary orbit (GEO), medium Earth orbit (MEO), or low Earth orbit (LEO), each offering different advantages in terms of coverage, latency, and cost.

Geostationary satellites orbit at an altitude of approximately 35,786 kilometers above the Earth's equator, appearing stationary from the ground. This allows for constant coverage of a specific region, but results in higher signal latency due to the long distance. MEO satellites orbit at lower altitudes than GEO satellites, offering a balance between coverage and latency. LEO satellites orbit at even lower altitudes, typically between 160 and 2,000 kilometers. They provide very low latency but require a constellation of many satellites to ensure continuous coverage.

Satellitkommunikation plays a vital role in global connectivity, disaster management, military operations, and scientific research, providing essential communication links where other methods fail. Advancements in satellite technology continue to improve bandwidth, reduce costs, and increase accessibility.
