Satelliteviestintä refers to the use of artificial satellites to relay radio signals for telecommunications. These satellites are placed in orbit around the Earth, typically in geostationary orbit, which allows them to remain in a fixed position relative to a point on the Earth's surface. This constant positioning is crucial for maintaining uninterrupted communication links.

The fundamental principle of satellite communication involves a ground station transmitting a signal to the satellite, known as an uplink. The satellite then amplifies and re-transmits this signal to another ground station, called a downlink. This process enables a wide range of services, including television broadcasting, internet access, mobile phone communication, and data transmission over long distances.
