The use of satellite references is often a matter of practicality. For instance, a researcher might be discussing a foundational theory that has been extensively cited and re-cited over many years. Instead of tracking down and citing every single publication that has ever mentioned this theory, they might cite a widely recognized and authoritative review article or a seminal paper that has been instrumental in popularizing the theory. This acknowledges the origin of the idea without requiring an exhaustive and potentially unfeasible literature search.

However, relying heavily on satellite references can also pose challenges. If the secondary source misinterprets or omits crucial details from the original work, this inaccuracy can be perpetuated through subsequent satellite references. It can also obscure the true lineage of an idea or finding. Therefore, while satellite references can be a useful tool for managing complex citation landscapes, they should be employed judiciously, with an awareness of their potential limitations.
