Satelliitinternet is a method of providing internet access using communication satellites. In this system, a user's satellite dish connects to a satellite orbiting the Earth. This satellite then acts as a relay, transmitting data between the user's dish and a ground station, often referred to as a Network Operations Center (NOC). The NOC is then connected to the wider internet backbone.

This technology is particularly useful in remote or rural areas where traditional terrestrial internet infrastructure, such as fiber optic cables or DSL lines, is not readily available or cost-effective to deploy. Satelliitinternet can offer a viable solution for connectivity in such locations.

However, satelliitinternet typically has higher latency compared to terrestrial alternatives. Latency refers to the delay in data transmission. This is because the data has to travel a much greater distance, up to the satellite and back, than it would over ground-based networks. This increased latency can affect performance in real-time applications like online gaming or video conferencing.

Another factor to consider is potential data caps and monthly costs, which can sometimes be higher than other internet service types. Despite these considerations, satelliitinternet remains an important option for bridging the digital divide and ensuring internet access for underserved populations.
