It encompasses a wide range of atmospheric occurrences related to water falling from the atmosphere to the Earth's surface. This includes various forms of precipitation such as rain, snow, sleet, and hail.

The formation of these phenomena is a complex process involving the water cycle. Water evaporates from bodies of water and land surfaces, rising into the atmosphere as water vapor. As this moist air cools, the water vapor condenses into tiny droplets or ice crystals, forming clouds. When these droplets or crystals grow large enough, they fall to the ground due to gravity.

The specific type of precipitation that forms depends on the temperature profile of the atmosphere between the cloud and the ground. If temperatures are above freezing all the way down, rain will fall. If temperatures are below freezing throughout, snow will form. Sleet occurs when snowflakes melt and then refreeze into ice pellets as they fall through a layer of sub-freezing air near the surface. Hail is formed within strong thunderstorm updrafts, where ice particles are repeatedly tossed up and down, accumulating layers of ice before falling to the ground.
