Satanists

Satanism is a broad term encompassing a variety of belief systems and ideologies that incorporate Satan as a central figure, albeit often symbolically. It is important to distinguish between different forms of Satanism, as they vary significantly in their tenets and practices.

The most prominent form is LaVeyan Satanism, founded by Anton LaVey in 1966. This atheistic philosophy views Satan not as a literal deity, but as a symbol of individualism, earthly pleasures, and defiance against traditional religious dogma. LaVeyan Satanism emphasizes self-indulgence, personal liberty, and the rejection of spiritualism. Its adherents typically do not engage in rituals involving worship of a supernatural entity.

Another significant group is The Satanic Temple (TST), which emerged in 2013. TST is also largely atheistic and non-theistic, using Satan as a literary and symbolic representation of rebellion against arbitrary authority and the pursuit of justice. Their activism often focuses on advocating for religious pluralism and challenging the encroachment of religious privilege in public life, using legal and political means.

Some other groups or individuals may identify as Satanists with more theistic beliefs, wherein Satan is considered a supernatural being to be revered or appeased. However, these theistic forms are less prevalent and often less publicly organized than the atheistic branches.

Due to its association with a figure often portrayed negatively in mainstream religions, Satanism has frequently been the subject of misunderstanding and sensationalism. It is crucial to approach discussions about Satanism with an understanding of its diverse interpretations and the distinction between symbolic and literal beliefs.
