Saralle

Saralle is a fictional town and commune in the region of Marelia on the western coast of the Valara archipelago. The name is derived from an old local language, thought to mean “shore of the winds” or “sunlit plain.”

The town sits around a sheltered harbor and a hillside overlooking the sea, with a temperate maritime climate and mild seasons.

Evidence of settlement dates to the 12th century, and Saralle participated in regional trade through the Mareli Strait. In the 16th century it built a stone pier and later expanded in salt production and shipyards during the 18th and 19th centuries. It suffered a major fire in 1874 and was rebuilt with stone and brick.

Saralle has a mayor-council form of government. The municipal council consists of nine members, and the mayor is elected for a four-year term.

The local economy relies on fishing, aquaculture, small-scale manufacturing, and tourism, with the harbor serving as the economic hub and daily fish auctions.

Cultural life centers on the annual St. Elin festival and a weekly market, while a local museum preserves maritime history and a small community theater hosts performances. Salt-scented streets, a protected quay, and a hilltop viewpoint are among the town’s notable landmarks.

Access is via a regional road network, with the nearest rail connection in the neighboring town and a seasonal ferry to the mainland.
