Sanforisiert
Sanforisiert is a trademarked finishing process for cotton and cotton blends that pre-shrinks fabric. The Sanforized process mechanically compacts the fabric by stretching and then shrinking it in a controlled manner. This treatment aims to prevent significant shrinkage when the garment is subsequently washed by the consumer. Before the Sanforized process was developed, garments made from cotton often shrank considerably after their first wash, leading to a poor fit. The trademark Sanforized was introduced by Cluett, Peabody & Co. in 1930. Fabrics that have undergone the Sanforized process are typically marked with a Sanforized label or symbol, assuring consumers that the shrinkage has been accounted for. This treatment is distinct from other methods of pre-shrinking fabric, such as heat-setting or the use of certain chemical finishes, and is recognized for its effectiveness in providing dimensional stability to cotton textiles.
