Sandfraktionen refers to the classification of sand based on the size of its constituent grains. According to this scale, sand is defined as particles ranging in diameter from 0.0625 millimeters to 2 millimeters. This broad range is further divided into subcategories. Very fine sand ranges from 0.0625 to 0.125 millimeters. Fine sand is from 0.125 to 0.25 millimeters. Medium sand is from 0.25 to 0.5 millimeters. Coarse sand is from 0.5 to 1 millimeter. Very coarse sand is from 1 to 2 millimeters.

Different sand fractions have distinct properties. Finer sands tend to have higher surface area to volume ratios, affecting properties like water retention and permeability.
