Salvagevägarna, literally “the salvage routes,” is a term used in Swedish emergency management to describe designated transport corridors and procedures that enable rapid access for salvage and rescue teams in the aftermath of disasters or major incidents. The concept encompasses both permanent road infrastructure prepared to accommodate high-priority salvage traffic and temporary measures implemented during emergencies to clear and secure routes for heavy equipment and personnel.

Purpose and scope: The routes aim to accelerate the removal of hazards, the recovery of damaged infrastructure, and the deployment of specialized salvage equipment. They may facilitate access to affected areas that are otherwise cut off by debris, flooding, or road closures. Salvagevägarna can also serve as coordinated channels for inter-agency cooperation and for prioritizing critical supply lines.

Organization: Coordination typically involves municipal emergency services, police, and, at the national level, the Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency (MSB). Planning covers route designation, legal rights of way, signage, traffic control, and communication procedures. Activation is triggered by declared emergencies or large-scale incidents where regular routes are insufficient.

Implementation and challenges: Permanent salvage corridors are integrated into urban and regional plans where feasible. Temporary measures rely on rapid traffic management and may require roadworks or reversals of lanes. Limitations include inter-agency coordination, weather conditions, and the risk of conflicting demands between salvage traffic and everyday transportation.
