Salische

The Salič or Salische are an extinct Western Slavic tribe that lived in the region of Greater Poland, known then as Sambia, in the area now composing the western parts of modern-day Pomerania. Historical records and archaeological findings suggest that the Saliči inhabited the land from the 6th to the 12th century.

The early history of the Saliči is shrouded in mystery due to lack of comprehensive historical documentation. However, it is assumed that they arrived in the Sambia region in the early Middle Ages as part of the larger Western Slavic migration that occurred in the 6th and 7th centuries. The Saliči were likely part of the larger Slavic group that inhabited the Pomeranian and Kuyavian regions in present-day Poland and northern Germany.

In terms of culture and language, the Saliči were likely similar to their Slavic neighbors in the region. They spoke a language that belonged to the Western Slavic branch of the Slavic languages. The archaeological findings indicate that the Saliči had a settled agricultural lifestyle, with an economy based on farming and livestock rearing.

The Saliči are mentioned in historical records as having been part of the Sambian duchy, a medieval state that existed in the region from the 9th to the 12th centuries. However, the duchy's history is not well recorded, and the precise role of the Saliči within the duchy is unclear. The Saliči are thought to have assimilated into the local German population over time, and by the 14th century, they had largely disappeared as a distinct ethnic group.
