Salafist

Salafism is a movement within Sunni Islam that advocates a return to what its adherents believe to be the "pious predecessors" (al-salaf al-salih), specifically the first three generations of Muslims: the companions of the Prophet Muhammad, their successors, and their successors' successors. Adherents, known as Salafis, seek to emulate the practices and beliefs of these early Muslims, interpreting the Quran and Sunnah (the teachings and practices of Prophet Muhammad) according to their understanding of the Salaf.

Salafism is not a monolithic movement and encompasses a range of theological, legal, and political viewpoints. Generally, Salafis emphasize Tawhid (the oneness of God) and reject what they perceive as innovations (bid'ah) in Islamic practice. They often advocate for a strict adherence to Sharia law and can be critical of contemporary Islamic thought that deviates from their interpretation of the early Muslim tradition.

While many Salafis are quietist, focusing on personal religious practice and education, a minority faction is politically active and some have been associated with violent extremism. These extremist groups, often labeled "Jihadist Salafis," advocate for the overthrow of existing Muslim governments and the establishment of an Islamic state through armed struggle. However, it is important to distinguish these groups from the broader Salafi movement, the majority of whom do not endorse violence. Salafism is a complex and diverse current within Islam, with adherents across the globe holding varied interpretations and approaches to their faith.
