Saint-Honorat, also known as Saint Honoratus, is a Christian saint venerated in Catholic and Orthodox traditions. He is traditionally regarded as the founder of Lérins Abbey on the Île Saint-Honorat, a small island off the coast near Cannes in southeastern France. The island and the abbey derive their name from him. His feast day is celebrated on May 16 in the Western liturgical calendar.

Life and significance: Born in late antiquity in the region of southern Gaul, Honoratus is believed to have studied in Rome and become bishop of Marseille. He later left urban life to form a monastic community on the island of Lérins, where he and his followers established a cenobitic monastery that became an influential center of Christian learning and monastic reform in Gaul. The abbey played a key role in the spread of Benedictine monastic practices and contributed to early medieval spirituality in the region.

The site today: The Île Saint-Honorat hosts the Abbey of Saint-Honorat, a continuing Benedictine monastery. Its monks cultivate vineyards and olive groves and produce wines and oils that support the monastery. The site remains a religious and cultural landmark; visitors may tour parts of the church, gardens, and winery, and attend services when available. Access is by regular boat service from Cannes, and the island forms part of the coastal landscape of the French Riviera.
