Sagarmath

Sagarmath is a variant transliteration of Sagarmatha, the Nepali name for Mount Everest, the highest peak on Earth at about 8,848 meters above sea level. The name is derived from Nepali words sagar (sky) and matha (forehead), reflecting Everest’s dominant profile in the Himalayas. In Nepal, Sagarmath is widely used in geographic naming, signage, and cultural references to the Everest region.

The term is also associated with Sagarmatha National Park, a protected area established in 1976 in the Khumbu region of northeastern Nepal. The park encompasses parts of the Everest massif, including peaks such as Everest, Lhotse, and Nuptse, and features glaciers like the Khumbu. In 1979, Sagarmatha National Park was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its dramatic alpine landscapes, unique geology, and the cultural heritage of the Sherpa communities who live in the high valleys.

Ecology and visitation are central to Sagarmatha National Park. The protected area preserves ecosystems ranging from temperate to alpine zones, with flora such as rhododendrons, mosses, and lichens, and fauna including the snow leopard, Himalayan musk deer, Himalayan tahr, and diverse birdlife. The region is a major destination for trekking and mountaineering, notably routes leading to Everest Base Camp and surrounding Everest region communities.
