SachsenGotha

SachsenGotha was a German state that existed from 1826 to 1918. It was formed from the merger of Saxe-Gotha and Saxe-Altenburg, though its name was retained as Saxe-Gotha. The duchy was part of the Confederation of the Rhine and later the German Confederation. Its capital was Gotha.

The ruling dynasty of Saxe-Gotha was the House of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, a branch of the Ernestine line of the House of Wettin. This dynasty would later ascend to the thrones of Belgium and the United Kingdom. The state was a constitutional monarchy, with a Landtag or parliament that held legislative power.

In 1918, following the defeat of Germany in World War I, the monarchy was abolished, and Saxe-Gotha became part of the Free State of Thuringia. The historical significance of Saxe-Gotha lies in its role as a territorial entity within the complex political landscape of 19th-century Germany and its connection to prominent European royal families. Its legacy is preserved in the town of Gotha, which continues to be a cultural and administrative center.
