SWIFTmessaging

SWIFT (Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunication) is a global cooperative providing a secure messaging network that enables financial institutions worldwide to exchange information about financial transactions. This network, often referred to as SWIFTmessaging, is a critical component of the global financial system. It allows banks, brokerages, and other financial entities to communicate with each other reliably and securely, facilitating the smooth processing of cross-border payments, securities transactions, and other financial operations.

The SWIFT system uses a standardized messaging format, known as the SWIFT message type, to ensure interoperability between different institutions. These messages contain detailed information about the transaction, including sender and receiver identifiers, transaction codes, amounts, currencies, and dates. While SWIFT is not a payment system itself, it is the primary channel through which instructions for payments and other financial transfers are communicated between banks. The network operates 24/7, ensuring that financial information can flow continuously across the globe.
