SSL/TLS-salauksen is a cryptographic protocol used for secure data transfer over the internet. The term is a combination of the abbreviations SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) and TLS (Transport Layer Security), with salauksen being a Finnish word for "encryption".

SSL was first introduced by Netscape in 1994, but was later replaced by TLS due to security flaws. The first version of TLS, known as TLS 1.0, was published in 1999 and became the standard protocol for secure web communication. Since then, several versions of TLS have been released, with TLS 1.2 being the most widely used.
