SPFaurinkosuojan is a Finnish term that translates to "sunscreen" in English. It refers to a cosmetic product designed to protect the skin from the harmful effects of ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun. These effects can include sunburn, premature aging of the skin, and an increased risk of skin cancer.

The effectiveness of a sunscreen is measured by its Sun Protection Factor (SPF). The SPF value indicates how well a sunscreen protects against UVB radiation, which is the primary cause of sunburn. A higher SPF number means greater protection. For example, SPF 30 blocks approximately 97% of UVB rays, while SPF 50 blocks about 98%.

Sunscreen formulations typically contain chemical or mineral filters that absorb or reflect UV radiation. Chemical filters work by absorbing UV rays and converting them into heat, which is then released from the skin. Mineral filters, such as zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, sit on the skin's surface and physically block UV rays.
