SOxpäästöihin

SOxpäästöihin refers to sulfur oxide emissions. These are gases containing sulfur and oxygen, primarily sulfur dioxide (SO2) and sulfur trioxide (SO3). The main source of these emissions is the combustion of fossil fuels, particularly coal and oil, which contain sulfur impurities. Industrial processes, such as smelting of metal ores, also contribute significantly to SOx emissions.

Sulfur oxides are major air pollutants. When released into the atmosphere, they can react with water, oxygen, and other chemicals to form sulfuric acid. This acid is a primary component of acid rain, which can damage forests, acidify lakes and streams, harm aquatic life, and corrode buildings and monuments. SOx emissions also contribute to the formation of particulate matter, which can have negative impacts on respiratory health and visibility.

In many countries, regulations have been put in place to limit SOx emissions. These measures include the use of low-sulfur fuels, the installation of pollution control technologies like scrubbers in industrial facilities and power plants, and the transition to cleaner energy sources. These efforts have led to a reduction in SOx emissions in many industrialized regions, improving air quality and mitigating the harmful effects of acid rain.
