SNAREkompleksit refer to a group of proteins that play a crucial role in intracellular membrane fusion events. These proteins are essential for the transport of molecules within cells, enabling vesicles to dock with and fuse to their target membranes. The name SNARE is an acronym for "SNAP receptors."

There are broadly two types of SNARE proteins: v-SNAREs (vesicle SNAREs) and t-SNAREs (target SNAREs). V-SNAREs are located on the membrane of transport vesicles, while t-SNAREs are found on the target membrane. When a vesicle needs to deliver its contents, its v-SNAREs interact with the t-SNAREs on the target membrane. This interaction forms a stable complex, bringing the two membranes into close proximity and triggering the fusion process.

The formation of the SNARE complex is a highly specific process. The unique combination of v- and t-SNAREs involved determines which vesicle fuses with which target membrane, ensuring accurate delivery of cellular cargo. This specificity is vital for maintaining the integrity and function of cellular compartments.

Dysfunctions in SNARE complex formation have been linked to various diseases. For example, certain neurodegenerative disorders are associated with defects in neurotransmitter release, which heavily relies on SNARE-mediated vesicle fusion at synapses. Research into SNARE proteins continues to shed light on fundamental cellular processes and has potential therapeutic implications.
