SNAPn

SNAPn is a fictional distributed protocol and software platform designed to illustrate principles of modern sensor networks. It is not an established standard.

The design envisions a modular stack with a node layer, routing layer, data plane, and security/control plane. Nodes can range from tiny motes to edge gateways. The protocol emphasizes energy efficiency, scalability, and resilience to a changing topology.

Communication model uses a hybrid routing approach combining proactive neighborhood discovery with on-demand route construction. It supports publish-subscribe messaging, in-network aggregation, and time-synchronized data collection.

Security features include lightweight mutual authentication, encrypted payloads, and secure over-the-air updates; management supports role-based access and device lifecycle.

Applications include environmental monitoring, smart cities, industrial IoT; theoretical advantages include reduced energy use and simplified data management. Limitations include implementation complexity, resource constraints on small devices, and lack of standardization; as a fictional construct, SNAPn serves as a teaching and research aid.
