SMSsõnumist is the Estonian term for an SMS message, which stands for Short Message Service. It is a telecommunications service that allows the sending and receiving of short text messages between mobile phones, or from a PC to a mobile phone. SMS messages are typically limited in length, originally to 160 characters, though this limit can be extended through concatenation.

The Short Message Service was developed in the 1980s and became widely available in the early 1990s. It quickly became a popular way to communicate due to its simplicity and the fact that it was a cheaper alternative to voice calls at the time. The technology works by sending messages over the control channel of a mobile phone network, rather than the voice channel, meaning messages can be sent and received even when a voice call is in progress.

In Estonia, as globally, SMSsõnumid have played a significant role in mobile communication. They were the primary method of text-based communication before the advent of instant messaging applications.
