A simkortti is the Finnish term for a SIM card, which stands for Subscriber Identity Module. It is a small, removable chip that contains the subscriber's identification information and is used to authenticate a user on a mobile network. The SIM card allows a mobile device, such as a smartphone or tablet, to connect to a cellular network and make calls, send texts, and access data services.

SIM cards store various pieces of information, including a unique International Mobile Subscriber Identity (IMSI) number, a unique authentication key, and local network data. This information is crucial for the mobile operator to identify and bill the subscriber. SIM cards come in different sizes, with the most common being the standard, micro, and nano SIM. Modern smartphones typically use nano SIM cards due to their smaller size.

The concept of the SIM card has evolved over time. Initially, they were larger, but technological advancements have led to increasingly smaller and more efficient designs. In recent years, eSIM technology has emerged, which is an embedded SIM that is programmed remotely and does not require a physical card to be inserted into the device. Despite the rise of eSIM, traditional physical SIM cards remain widely used globally.
