SERkeräyspisteitä

SERkeräyspisteitä are designated collection points for Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) in Finland. WEEE, also known as sähkö- ja elektroniikkaromu in Finnish, encompasses a wide range of products that are powered by electricity or batteries and have reached the end of their useful life. These include everything from large appliances like refrigerators and washing machines to smaller items such as mobile phones, computers, and even light bulbs.

The purpose of SERkeräyspisteitä is to facilitate the responsible collection and recycling of WEEE. By law, producers and importers of electrical and electronic equipment are responsible for the collection and proper disposal of their products once they become waste. This responsibility is fulfilled through a network of collection points, often located at municipal waste management centers, retail stores that sell electronics, or dedicated recycling facilities.

When consumers have WEEE to dispose of, they can take it to a designated SERkeräyspiste. At these locations, the waste is sorted and collected for further processing. Recycling WEEE is crucial for several reasons. It allows for the recovery of valuable materials, such as metals and plastics, which can be reused in new products, thereby conserving natural resources. Furthermore, WEEE can contain hazardous substances that, if not handled properly, can pose a risk to the environment and human health. Proper recycling ensures that these hazardous components are managed safely. The SERkeräyspiste system is a key component of Finland's circular economy initiatives, aiming to minimize waste and maximize resource utilization.
