S34

S34 is an alphanumeric designation used in various domains to identify different items, routes, or safety information. The most widely recognized use is in the European Union's older system of safety phrases (S-phrases) for labeling dangerous substances. In that system, S34 denotes “Causes burns.” Labels bearing S34 signaled that a chemical could cause skin corrosive effects on contact and required precautions such as wearing protective gloves and eye protection and immediate rinsing if contact occurs. With the introduction of the Globally Harmonized System (GHS) and the CLP Regulation, S-phrases were largely replaced by hazard statements (H phrases); the closest modern equivalent for this hazard is H314, “Causes severe skin burns and eye damage.” Some legacy safety data sheets and packaging may still display S34, but new materials use the H314 designation.
