Süsteemitasandite

Süsteemitasandite is a term from Estonian geology and sedimentology used to describe a proposed class of sedimentary deposits that exhibit multi-scale, hierarchical organization. The concept combines “system” and “tasand” (layer or stratum) with the mineral suffix -ite to indicate a distinct sedimentary phase. In theory, süsteemitasandite form when sedimentation is governed by interacting processes across several spatial and temporal scales, producing self-similar layering from grain-scale arrangements to macrostratigraphic sequences.

Formation and characteristics: They are envisaged as deposits where hydrodynamic regimes, sediment supply, and diagenetic factors interact to create layered architectures with recurring patterns in grain size, composition, and porosity. The grains are typically quartz-rich with clay coatings and may show facies transitions that reflect shifts in transport energy. The resulting units display hierarchical porosity, with micro-pores within grains and larger intra- and interlayer pore networks.
