Sõrmepadjandid

Sõrmepadjandid, also known as digital pads or tactile pads, are thickened, fleshy areas on the ventral (underside) surface of the digits of many vertebrates. These structures are characterized by their ridged, often hairless, skin, which significantly enhances friction and grip. The unique patterns of these ridges, known as dermatoglyphs, are individual to each animal and are formed during embryonic development.

The primary function of sõrmepadjandid is to improve the ability to grasp and manipulate objects, as well as to provide enhanced traction on various surfaces. This is particularly crucial for arboreal species who rely on their digits for climbing, and for predators needing to secure prey.
