Säteilynjohteita, known in English as radiation shielding, refers to materials or structures designed to absorb or deflect ionizing radiation. The primary purpose of radiation shielding is to protect living organisms and sensitive equipment from the harmful effects of radiation, such as that emitted by radioactive materials, X-ray machines, or in space. The effectiveness of a shielding material depends on its density, atomic number, and thickness, as well as the type and energy of the radiation it is intended to block.

Different types of radiation require different shielding strategies. Alpha and beta particles, which have relatively low penetration power, can be stopped by thin layers of dense materials like lead or plastic. Gamma rays and neutrons, however, are more penetrating and require thicker, denser materials for effective shielding. Common materials used for gamma shielding include lead and concrete, while concrete and water are often employed for neutron shielding due to their hydrogen content, which is effective at slowing down neutrons.

Applications of radiation shielding are widespread. In nuclear power plants and research facilities, thick concrete walls and leaded glass are used to contain radiation. In medical settings, lead aprons are used to protect patients and staff during X-ray procedures, and specialized shielding is incorporated into linear accelerators and other radiation therapy equipment. In space exploration, spacecraft are designed with shielding to protect astronauts from cosmic rays and solar radiation. The design of effective radiation shielding is a critical aspect of safety in many technological and scientific fields.
