Sähköreformointi, also known as electroreforming or electrochemical reforming, is a process that uses electricity to convert a fuel, such as methane or ethanol, into synthesis gas (syngas). Syngas is a mixture of hydrogen and carbon monoxide, which can be used as a feedstock for various industrial processes, including the production of fuels and chemicals.

The electroreforming process typically takes place in an electrochemical reactor. The fuel is introduced into the reactor along with an electrolyte. An electric current is then passed through the electrolyte, causing the fuel to undergo electrochemical reactions that break it down into hydrogen and carbon monoxide. The electricity can be sourced from renewable energy, such as solar or wind power, making the process potentially more sustainable than traditional reforming methods.

Compared to traditional steam reforming, electroreforming offers several advantages. It can operate at lower temperatures, which can reduce energy consumption and equipment costs. It also allows for more precise control over the composition of the syngas produced, which can be beneficial for specific downstream applications. Furthermore, by using renewable electricity, electroreforming can significantly reduce the carbon footprint associated with syngas production.

Challenges associated with electroreforming include the development of efficient and durable electrode materials and electrolytes, as well as scaling up the technology for industrial applications. Research is ongoing to improve the energy efficiency and cost-effectiveness of electroreforming, with the goal of making it a viable alternative to conventional methods for producing hydrogen and syngas.
