Säätelyreaktiot, also known as regulatory responses, are the physiological and behavioral adjustments an organism makes to maintain homeostasis. Homeostasis is the stable internal environment necessary for survival, and it involves keeping various parameters such as body temperature, blood glucose levels, and pH within narrow limits. When these parameters deviate from their set points, the body triggers a series of regulatory mechanisms.

These responses can be broadly categorized into negative feedback and positive feedback loops. Negative feedback is the most common mechanism. In a negative feedback loop, the response counteracts the initial stimulus, bringing the parameter back to its normal range. For example, if body temperature rises, the body initiates mechanisms like sweating and vasodilation to cool down. Conversely, if body temperature drops, shivering and vasoconstriction generate heat.

Positive feedback loops are less common and amplify the initial stimulus, driving a process to completion. Childbirth is a classic example, where uterine contractions stimulate the release of oxytocin, which in turn intensifies contractions. While not directly maintaining homeostasis in the same way as negative feedback, positive feedback is crucial for specific physiological events.

Behavioral adaptations also play a significant role in regulatory responses. Seeking shade when it's hot or putting on warmer clothing when it's cold are examples of behavioral adjustments that help maintain internal stability. The nervous system and endocrine system are the primary controllers of these complex regulatory reactions, coordinating the various effector organs to restore balance.
