Säätökierto, a Finnish term, translates to "control loop" in English and refers to a fundamental concept in automation and control systems. It describes a process where a system's output is measured, compared to a desired setpoint, and then adjusted to minimize any difference. This continuous cycle of measurement, comparison, and adjustment is crucial for maintaining stability and achieving specific performance targets in a wide range of applications.

The core components of a säätökierto include a sensor that measures the actual output, a controller that processes the measured value and calculates the necessary adjustments, and an actuator that implements these adjustments to influence the system. The setpoint represents the desired value for the system's output. The difference between the measured output and the setpoint is known as the error signal. The controller's primary function is to reduce this error to zero or a negligible level.

Säätökierto can be implemented in various ways, with common types including proportional (P), integral (I), and derivative (D) control, often combined as PID control. These control strategies determine how the controller reacts to the error signal.
