Részarány

Részarány is a mathematical and statistical concept referring to the proportion of a part relative to a whole. It expresses how large a subset is compared to the total set or quantity and is a type of ratio focused on a part–to–whole relationship. The concept is dimensionless and can be handled as a fraction, a decimal, or a percentage.

Calculation and representation: If a part has size N and the whole has size T, the részarány is R = N/T. To express it as a percentage, multiply by 100, yielding (N/T) × 100%. For example, if 3 of 12 students are girls, the részarány of girls is 3/12 = 0.25, i.e., 25%.

Usage and interpretation: Részarány is widely used in mathematics, statistics, economics, and social sciences to describe shares, contributions, or occurrences relative to the total. It is also used in probability as a relative frequency to represent the likelihood of events in a long-run sense. In reporting, a részarány can describe market share, demographic composition, resource allocation, or any situation where a part’s size is compared to the whole.

Relation to other terms: While arány (ratio) denotes a general comparison between two quantities, részarány emphasizes the portion of a whole. The term can be combined with adjectives such as részarányos to describe a part-based proportion.
