Ruteng

Ruteng is the administrative capital of Manggarai Regency in East Nusa Tenggara province, Indonesia. Located on the central highlands of Flores Island, the town sits at elevated terrain that gives it a cooler climate compared with coastal areas. It serves as the government, economic, and transportation hub for the regency, linking rural communities in the surrounding valleys to markets and services.

The town lies near the volcanic Ruteng Pu'u, a prominent hill that provides panoramic views and terraced landscapes favored by visitors. The Ruteng Cathedral, also known as Gereja Katedral Ruteng, is a major religious site in the town, reflecting the long-standing Catholic presence in the region. The rural surroundings feature rice terraces, coffee farms, and traditional Manggarai houses on gently sloping land.

The Manggarai language is widely spoken in Ruteng, and the population includes Manggarai and other groups. Traditional customs such as the Caci whip dance are performed during ceremonies. Local markets and crafts reflect a blend of indigenous practices and Christian influences.

Agriculture remains the mainstay, with coffee, maize, cassava, and rice produced for local consumption and sale. Ruteng functions as a regional market town where agricultural products are traded. Access is primarily by road with connections to other Flores towns; the area serves as a gateway to nearby highland attractions and to the island’s other districts.
