Rustokerrosten

Rustokerrosten refers to the rust layers that form on iron and steel surfaces as a result of oxidation in the presence of moisture and oxygen. The process is a form of corrosion in which water facilitates the transfer of electrons between iron and oxygen, producing hydrated iron oxides and oxyhydroxides that accumulate as a porous, often flaky, scale on the metal.

Chemically, common components of rust layers include goethite (FeO(OH)), lepidocrocite (FeOOH), hematite (Fe2O3), and magnetite (Fe3O4) at various stages of transformation. The inner part of a rust layer may be denser and more adherent, while the outer portion is typically looser and more permeable. In many cases the rust film is non-protective, allowing continued access of water and oxygen, which accelerates further corrosion. Under certain conditions, such as the formation of magnetite, the oxide can become somewhat more stable, but even then it usually does not provide long-term protection unless it forms a very tight, continuous barrier.

Factors influencing rustokerrosten include humidity, temperature, oxygen availability, the presence of electrolytes (especially chlorides), alloy composition, and surface finish. Mechanical damage, surface roughness, and galvanic coupling with other metals can also accelerate rust formation.

Prevention and control rely on barriers and interruption of electrochemical processes. Approaches include protective coatings, painting, galvanization, cathodic protection, alloy selection with corrosion resistance, and the use of inhibitors. Regular inspection and maintenance help limit material loss from rust layers in infrastructure, ships, and machinery.
