Ruokavaliokäytäviä, meaning dietary passages or food passages in English, refers to the journey food takes through the digestive system, from ingestion to elimination. This process is a complex series of mechanical and chemical actions designed to break down food into absorbable nutrients and expel waste products.

The journey begins in the mouth, where food is mechanically broken down by chewing and mixed with saliva, initiating chemical digestion. From the mouth, the bolus of food travels down the esophagus to the stomach. Here, strong muscular contractions and acidic gastric juices further break down the food.

The partially digested food then moves into the small intestine. This is the primary site for nutrient absorption, where enzymes from the pancreas and liver aid in breaking down carbohydrates, proteins, and fats into molecules small enough to pass into the bloodstream. The remaining indigestible material continues into the large intestine.

In the large intestine, water is absorbed from the remaining waste material, forming feces. Bacteria in the large intestine also play a role in breaking down some remaining components and synthesizing certain vitamins. Finally, the feces are stored in the rectum until elimination from the body through the anus. Each stage of this ruokavaliokäytävä is crucial for overall health and nutrient assimilation.
