The term combines Finnish elements: "runkoverkko" meaning skeleton or core network and "sana" meaning word, to denote a central set of base lexemes from which other forms are derived. In this framework, each core word (runkosana) serves as a hub in a network of inflected, derived, and compounded variants, linked by shared semantics and morphosyntactic patterns.

The approach emphasizes the ways in which words are built from a small set of semantically central roots, and how affixes, inflectional endings, and derivational morphemes attach to these roots to create related words. Proponents argue that mapping these networks helps reveal systematic connections that may be obscured by surface forms, aiding linguistic description, lexicography, and natural language processing.
